Where science gets complex, my work begins.
How does mineral oil end up in chocolate? What will astronauts eat on their way to Mars? And what does a pear reveal about its aroma when it is analysed in the lab? I have been following questions like these for many years, for trade journals and for companies. I evaluate primary sources, meaning scientific publications and study results, talk to the experts and write texts that shed light on background and context, ideally leave readers a little wiser, and are a pleasure to read to the end.
About me
Chemical engineer, journalist and qualified baker
I studied chemical engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) with a focus on instrumental analysis and environmental protection. I am also a qualified baker with a German journeyman’s certificate (Gesellenbrief), which gives me a hands-on view of raw materials and food processing. After an editorial traineeship and a scholarship from the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI), which took me to the science desks of Focus, Geo and Deutschlandfunk, I set up as a freelance science and technology journalist in 1997.
Today I write daily news for DeviceMed, contribute to the Deutsche Lebensmittel-Rundschau and have covered analytical chemistry for LABORPRAXIS for more than two decades. For more than 20 years, I was editor-in-chief and managing editor of GERSTEL’s customer magazines, GERSTEL Aktuell in German and GERSTEL Solutions worldwide in English.
